Everyone
has a story to tell. Not nearly enough are heard.
Some of our most expressive, and critical voices
are taken for granted, silenced by their youth. But now a compelling set of
voices arises from within today’s deeply diverse literary world, speaking well beyond
their collective years, and with candid viewpoints tinged with vulnerability and
courage.
Outer
Thinking
from
the Inner City is a remarkable new book that debuted to overwhelming support and
response in 2002.
Penned by
four inner city middle and high school students
from
Albany, NY, Outer Thinking is a
powerful collection of short stories and poems that evoke honest perspectives
straight from the hearts and minds of our youth. More than typical teen
angst issues, Outer Thinking explores intense subject matters such
as self-esteem, single motherhood, love, family and murder – and is poised to influence
readers young and old, worldwide.
Outer
Thinking from the Inner City
began as just that – an innovative volunteer program idea by novelist Gerald
K. Malcom, who drew inspiration from the talented students he encountered as
an educator in
Albany. Compelled by the void in the
academic curriculum in his community, Malcom established the trailblazing Books
By Us program, setting out to teach high school students the process of self-publishing, from
creation to printing.
The
program focuses on building entrepreneurial spirit and creating a positive
environment for minority students.
