Malcom’s reach extends far beyond his literary prowess. On his path to the literary arena were stops in the field of education. Believing in the impact of resilient African American male role models, Gerald K. Malcom became a counselor at a group home for troubled young men. He continued on the path as a special education teacher’s aide at Albany High School in Albany, New York. 

Among his proudest accomplishments in education and in publishing is a project he founded called Books By Us. Compelled by the void in the academic curricula in his community, Malcom established and volunteers in the trailblazing new program

that teaches high school students the process of self-publishing. From brainstorming to printing, the program focuses on building entrepreneurial spirit and creating a positive environment for minority students.

Books By Us culminated in the publishing of the students’ collection of short stories and poems entitled
